What each one actually is
Compost is bulk. It's the decomposed remains of crop residue, weeds, farmyard manure, kitchen and farm waste — turned, watered, and left for the fungi and bacteria to break down over weeks to months. The output is a dark, crumbly material you apply by the cartload: it is largely stable organic matter plus a broad living community. Think of it as the meal: it feeds the soil food web in bulk and it physically bulks up the soil.

Jeevamrut is neither meal nor concentrate — it's the starter and the snack. A few days' ferment of cow dung, urine, jaggery, pulse flour and a handful of live soil in water, diluted heavily and applied as a liquid. It adds almost no bulk and only tiny amounts of actual nutrients; its job is to inoculate and to prime the workforce already in your soil with a burst of easy food. The pattern to notice: compost and vermicompost solve the same class of problem at different scales and concentrations; jeevamrut solves a different problem entirely. It is not a substitute for either. A drum of jeevamrut on a field with no organic matter is a starter with nothing to start — you've woken a workforce and given it nothing to eat.
The trap: using the liquid to avoid the labour
Here's the honest failure I see most. Compost is heavy and slow to make. Jeevamrut is light and quick. So farmers quietly drift toward "I'll just spray the brew" because it's less back-breaking than turning heaps and carting them out.
That's substituting the snack for the meal. For the practitioner: run the arithmetic. A cartload of compost might carry tens of kilos of nutrients and, more importantly, hundreds of kilos of the bulk organic matter that builds structure and holds water. A drum of jeevamrut carries a few hundred grams to low single-digit kilos of nutrients per acre and almost no bulk †. They are not in the same order of magnitude on either count. The brew accelerates a system; it cannot be the system.
Jeevamrut is the match. Compost is the firewood. A match with no wood just burns your fingers.
Making them well — the short version
- Compost: balance "browns" (dry residue, straw, dry leaves — the carbon) and "greens" (fresh weeds, manure, kitchen waste — the nitrogen); keep it as damp as a wrung-out cloth; turn it for air; give it weeks to months. Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and smells like forest floor, not like the material you started with.
- Vermicompost: a shaded bed, part-decomposed feedstock (worms don't like fresh, hot manure), steady moisture, protection from ants, sun and waterlogging. Harvest the castings; keep the worms for the next batch.

So — which is better?
None of them. They're three different tools, and a soil that's hard and lifeless, a nursery tray, and a mid-season crop are three different jobs. Diagnose first — what is my soil actually short of: bulk, concentrated nutrients, or biological activity? — and the choice makes itself. Reach for compost to build, vermicompost to enrich, jeevamrut to wake. The farmers who get frustrated are almost always the ones who picked one tool and expected it to do all three jobs.
