There is a moment, a little before six, when the drum is still cool from the night and the surface has gone to froth — a slow, breathing foam the colour of weak tea. You stir it clockwise with a stick, the smell is sweet-sour and alive, and it is very hard, in that moment, to believe you are pouring nothing onto your field.
That feeling is exactly the problem this article is about.
Jeevamrut (also spelt jivamrita, "nectar of life") is the fermented brew at the heart of Zero Budget Natural Farming and much of Indian natural farming. Its supporters credit it with darker soil, returning earthworms, better yields. Its critics call it a placebo dressed up as microbiology. Both camps write with total confidence. Neither, in my reading, writes fairly. So let us try — from a working farm on dry, red-soil country, with the literature open on the table.
First, what jeevamrut actually is
Plainly: you ferment a little cow dung and urine with some sugar and pulse flour in water for a few days, then dilute it heavily and apply it to your soil with irrigation. That's it. It is not a fertiliser you dump; it is a small living culture you spread thin.
The widely-published Palekar formulation, per acre, runs roughly:

You mix it in the drum, keep it in the shade, stir twice a day clockwise, and let it ferment 48 hours to about 5–7 days. Then it goes out with the irrigation water, or as a foliar spray at higher dilution.
The real fight: what is it doing?
Here is where honest people disagree. There are four theories, and they are not mutually exclusive.
1. It's a microbial inoculant. You're adding live bacteria and fungi to soil. Going deeper: this is the headline claim, and it's the weakest link. Soil already teems with microbes; whether a thin dose of drum-fermented organisms establishes against an incumbent community — rather than getting outcompeted in a week — is the hard question, and controlled soil-microbiome evidence in Indian field conditions is limited †.
2. It's a dilute nutrient source. For the practitioner: run the arithmetic. Ten kilos of dung and a few litres of urine, spread over an acre, deliver only a few hundred grams to low single-digit kilos of actual N-P-K †. That is a rounding error next to the 40–100 kg of N a cereal crop wants. Jeevamrut alone cannot feed a hungry crop. Anyone who tells you it replaces all nutrition is selling something.
3. It's food (a substrate) for the microbes already there. This is the theory I find most plausible on dry, low-carbon soils. The jaggery and pulse flour are a burst of easily-eaten carbon and nitrogen — you're not so much importing a workforce as throwing a feast for the one already living in your soil, priming a bloom that mineralises nutrients and builds structure. Plausible, mechanistically sound, and still under-tested at field scale †.
4. It's mostly the placebo of better management. The skeptic's knife: the farmer who starts jeevamrut almost never changes only jeevamrut. They mulch. They intercrop. They stop spraying pesticide. They pay closer attention. Any of those, alone, darkens soil and brings back worms. So when the field improves, which lever moved it?
Jeevamrut may work. The farm around it almost certainly does. Untangling the two is the whole scientific problem.
Why the evidence is genuinely thin
You would think, given how many lakh farmers use it, we'd know. We mostly don't — not to the standard a soil scientist would sign off on.
Reviews of ZBNF and natural farming have repeatedly concluded that the yield and soil evidence is a mix of promising on-station results, farmer surveys, and a shortage of long, replicated, controlled field trials †. Andhra Pradesh's large APCNF programme has generated substantial adoption data and some evaluations †, but adoption is not the same as a controlled test of jeevamrut-in-isolation.
Going deeper — what a study would actually need: same soil, same crop, same variety, same irrigation, same mulch, same everything — with jeevamrut the only difference between plots. Randomised, replicated across several plots, repeated over at least three to five seasons (soil biology moves slowly), with real measurements: soil organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, and yield — not just the farmer's eye. Very few published trials clear that bar. That is not a verdict against jeevamrut. It is an honest statement of how little we've truly tested.
So — a fair verdict
I won't pretend to a certainty I don't have. Here is where a farmer-scholar can honestly stand:
- Jeevamrut is cheap, low-risk, and biologically plausible — most convincingly as a microbial food and starter, less so as a standalone inoculant, and not at all as a complete fertiliser.
- The farmer experience is real and consistent — but so are all the other things farmers change at the same time. Believe the observation; be humble about the cause.
- The controlled evidence is thin and mixed — not damning, just genuinely incomplete. Anyone claiming jeevamrut is proven to lift yields, or proven worthless, is ahead of the data.
The honest position is not the mushy middle. It's this: jeevamrut is a sensible, low-cost practice inside a good natural-farming system — and its magic, if any, is inseparable from the system. Do not expect it to carry a depleted field alone. Do expect it to be worth the ₹0–200 and the hour it costs, if you're also feeding your soil real organic matter.
Run your own honest trial — on one acre
You don't need a journal. You need a control strip and patience.
Do that, and after a few seasons you'll have something most published papers on jeevamrut don't: a clean, side-by-side answer for your soil, your rain, your crop.
That drum at dawn may or may not be nectar. But a farmer who keeps a control strip and an honest notebook is doing better science than most of what's been written about it — and will know, for their own field, long before the journals settle it.
