Place the main gate so that heavy, frequent traffic enters near where heavy things are handled — the shed, the produce-loading point, the manure store — not on the far side of the farm from all of them. Every truck that has to trundle across the whole property to reach the loading point is compacting your soil and lengthening every delivery. If the natural road access is unavoidably far from your work area, that fact alone should shape where you put the shed and the loading point — let the fixed gate pull the movable buildings toward it.

The mistakes that cost the most

Too many paths, none built well. Scattering effort across a dozen half-made tracks leaves you with a dozen muddy trails and no reliable route. Concentrate your building on one good spine.
