Every farming year begins with the same small act, so ordinary it's easy to miss its weight: putting seed in the ground. Where that seed came from decides more than the harvest. It decides whether the farm begins the year free or already in debt to someone else. This is what "seed sovereignty" means — not a slogan, but the plainest possible question: who owns the first input of your season?
The one line to keep

Save your own seed and next year's crop begins for the price of a clay pot and some care. Buy it fresh every season — because it's hybrid, or patented, or simply because the habit of saving has been lost — and you have signed up for a recurring payment that renews whether or not the rains come, whether or not the price of your produce fell, whether or not you had a good year. The seed becomes a bill, not a birthright.
That is why saving seed is the most radical thing on the farm. Not radical as in loud — radical as in root (the word's real meaning). It goes to the root of the farm's economics, ecology, and independence at once.
Why so much modern seed can't be saved
Three things, honestly told, have moved seed from something you keep to something you buy.
1. Hybrids don't come true. A hybrid (an F1) is the first-generation cross of two carefully chosen parent lines, bred for a burst of vigour and uniformity. Save its seed and the next generation "segregates" — it splits into a variable, often disappointing mix, because the parental traits reshuffle. So hybrids, by their genetics, force a repurchase every season. This is a biological lock, not a legal one, and it is real †.
2. Some seed carries legal and technological locks. Patents, plant-variety protection, and licensing agreements can make saving certain proprietary varieties a legal grey area or outright restriction, depending on the variety and the country's law. What a village loses when it stops saving
The cost isn't only the annual seed bill. It compounds:
- Genetic diversity erodes. A handful of commercial hybrids replacing dozens of local landraces narrows the crop's gene pool. That diversity was the farm's insurance — different varieties failing and thriving in different years, so a village was never wiped out by a single pest or drought. Uniformity is efficient in a good year and catastrophic in a bad one.

The honest other side
Seed sovereignty is not a purity test, and pretending hybrids are villains helps no one. The honest balance:
- Hybrids and improved varieties earned their place. Their vigour, uniformity, and disease resistance lifted yields and incomes for millions; a family a few rupees from the edge is right to plant what yields most this year, not what's most romantic. Sovereignty is about keeping the choice, not banning one option.

Why "radical" is the right word
Because it reaches the root. A farmer who saves seed changes the arithmetic of the whole farm — a lower cash cost at the year's very first step, less debt exposure, a hedge against a bad market and a bad monsoon at once. They change the ecology — keeping alive the diverse, locally-adapted varieties that a market of a few hybrids erases.
