A lab soil test costs a few hundred rupees, takes weeks, and comes back as a page of numbers many farmers quietly file away because no one ever taught them to read it. It has its place — we cover reading those reports in a companion article. But there are three things about your soil that matter enormously and that you can find out this afternoon, for nothing, with a jar, some water, and your own two hands.
Those three things are texture (what your soil is made of), infiltration (how fast water soaks in), and life (whether there's a working food web down there).
Test 1 — Texture: the jar test and the ribbon test
Texture is the ratio of sand, silt and clay. It's the one thing about your soil you basically cannot change, and it governs everything downstream — drainage, water-holding, how easily it compacts.
The jar test (do this once, per field).
- Fill a straight-sided glass jar about one-third with soil taken from the top hand-span, removing stones and roots.
- Top up with water to nearly full, add a small pinch of salt or a little dish soap (this helps the clay separate rather than clump) †.
- Shake it hard for a couple of minutes until everything is suspended.
- Set it on a windowsill and don't touch it.
Now watch it settle in layers, heaviest first:
- Within a minute or so: the sand drops to the bottom — you can see the grains.
- Over a few hours: the silt settles on top of the sand — finer, smoother.
- Over a day or more: the clay finally settles as the top layer; the water above clears slowly.
Measure the depth of each band against the total. Roughly equal-ish parts with a good clay fraction is a loam — the soil everyone wants. Mostly sand drains fast and holds little; lots of clay holds water and nutrients but can waterlog and set hard. Our dry red soils often surprise people here — they can carry more clay than they feel like they do when dry and dusty.
The ribbon test (do this anywhere, in a minute).
Take a walnut-sized lump of soil, wet it to the stickiness of putty, and work it between thumb and forefinger, pushing it out into a ribbon over the edge of your finger.
- Won't form a ribbon at all, feels gritty, falls apart: sandy.
- Forms a short ribbon (under ~2.5 cm) before breaking, feels smooth/floury: loam / silt loam.
- Forms a long ribbon (over ~5 cm), feels sticky and shines when smeared: clay-heavy.
Test 2 — Infiltration: how fast does water go in?
This is the test that predicts whether a monsoon rain soaks into your field or runs off it carrying your topsoil away. It needs nothing but a tin can with both ends out, or a short length of pipe, and some water.
- Take an open-ended tin/pipe, say 10–15 cm across. Push or gently hammer it a few centimetres into the soil so it seals at the base.
- Pour in water to a marked depth — say 5 cm — and note the time.
- Watch how long the water takes to disappear into the soil. Note it.
- Do it twice. The first pour wets a dry soil and drains fast; the second pour, on already-wet soil, gives you the truer, steadier infiltration rate. Time the second one.
You don't need a rulebook of numbers to read this. What matters is the comparison and the trend:
- Water gone in a few minutes on a sandy soil is normal (it also means it won't hold that water long).
- Water standing for a long time — many minutes to hours — on the second pour means a tight, crusted, or compacted soil that will shed monsoon rain instead of banking it.
- The real value is repeating it. Test the same spot before and after a season of mulching and cover-cropping. If water soaks in faster than it used to, your soil structure — and your rain-harvest — is genuinely improving. That trend is worth more than any single number †.
Test 3 — Life: the spade, the worms, and the underpants
Biology is the hardest to measure and the most important. You can't count a billion bacteria at home — but you can read their handiwork.
The spade-square. After a rain, dig a cube about a hand-span each way. On the spade and in the hole, look for:
- Earthworms. Count them. More is better; a healthy square holding several is a good sign, near-zero on moist soil is a warning. (Worms are a rough proxy, not gospel — some genuinely alive soils are naturally worm-poor.)
- Smell. Living soil smells sweet and earthy. That smell is real — a compound called geosmin, produced chiefly by soil actinomycetes such as Streptomyces [Gerber & Lechevalier, "Geosmin, an earthy-smelling substance isolated from actinomycetes," Applied Microbiology 13(6):935–938, 1965; PMID 5866039]. A sour, sharp, or dead smell is a bad sign; no smell at all is a thin one.
- Roots and threads. Fine roots running everywhere, and pale threads (fungi) through the crumbs, mean a working network below.
- Crumb structure. Squeeze a handful. Living soil breaks into rounded crumbs of varying sizes. Dead soil either slumps into a paste or falls apart as loose dust.
The "cotton underpants" / cloth-strip test (the fun one). Bury a piece of plain cotton cloth (a strip of old cotton clothing works) a hand-span deep, and dig it up after a couple of months. In biologically active soil, the microbes will have eaten it to tatters — sometimes almost to the waistband. In dead soil, it comes up nearly intact. It's a genuine, if rough, demonstration of biological activity, and it's the one test that makes children come running [USDA-NRCS "Soil Your Undies" Challenge — a qualitative citizen-science method: "the more the undies are deteriorated, the healthier your soil"].
When to spend the money anyway
Free tests are brilliant for texture, water and life. They can't give you pH, nutrient levels, salinity, or organic carbon percentage — and if your crops are struggling in ways these three tests don't explain, a lab test is worth the few hundred rupees. Think of it as a layered approach: hands first, because they're free and immediate and teach you your land; lab second, when a specific number is missing.
