Stand at your kitchen door early one morning, before the heat, and count. How many times today will you walk to the vegetable patch? To the compost heap? To the goats? To that far corner where the mango trees are? Then multiply by 365, then by twenty years of farming. That number — the tally of your own footsteps — is the single biggest cost most small farmers never write down and never think to reduce.

This piece is about reducing it, using nothing but a pencil and a habit of noticing. It's the most boring-sounding idea in farm design and, over a decade, the most valuable.

The one idea: place things by how often you visit them

Two refinements separate a good plan from a textbook one.

First, zone by the element's neediest week, not its average. An orchard is outer-ring for eleven months and inner-ring during harvest — so run a good cart path to it even though it's far, because for two weeks a year you'll move heavy crates along it daily. Frequency sets the distance; peak load sets the path quality.

Second, let the daily path do double duty. The route you walk most — door to animals to compost — should pass through the things that reward a passing glance: the seedling trays that need a look, the bed where pests show first. A farm designed well means your most-walked line is also your most-observed line, and you catch trouble early without a special inspection trip.

Why this beats buying a machine

A rotavator saves you labour on the day you plough. A well-zoned layout saves you labour every day you farm, forever, and it costs nothing but thought.

Consider the arithmetic without pretending to false precision. Suppose a badly-placed kitchen garden adds just 200 extra metres to your daily rounds — a trivial-sounding walk. Over a year that's about 73 km of pointless walking; over twenty years, well over a thousand kilometres, much of it while carrying water or a full basket. No machine you buy will return that. And unlike a machine, good placement never breaks down, needs no diesel, and depreciates not at all.

The mistakes beginners make

Planting the vegetable garden where the "good soil" is, far from the door. Soil can be built with compost and mulch over a season or two; distance can never be shortened. Build soil near the house rather than banishing the daily crop to the far field.

Putting the compost heap out of sight. If it's a long walk, you won't feed it kitchen scraps daily — you'll let them rot in a bucket or bin them. Compost belongs on the daily line, downwind of the door but on the way to somewhere you already go.

Placing the nursery for the plants' comfort, not yours. Seedlings do need the right light and shelter — but a nursery you can't glance at twice a day is a nursery of dead seedlings. Meet the plants' needs within the inner ring, with shade cloth and a pot arrangement, rather than exiling them.
