Beyond the Cow: Bees, Poultry, and Goats as Ecological Workers

The right animal closes a loop and pays rent — three that earn their keep beyond the milk pail.

In Indian natural farming the cow gets top billing — dung, urine, the whole cultural weight of it. Fair enough. But a cow is a large, thirsty, expensive commitment, and on a small dry-country farm she can't do every job. The more useful question is not "should I keep a cow?" but "which animal closes a loop my farm currently leaks — and pays rent while it does?" Answer that honestly and you find that bees, poultry, and goats each earn a place the cow can't fill.

The frame: an animal must close a loop AND pay rent

Every animal on a farm is two things at once: an ecological worker (it does a job in the farm's cycles) and a tenant (it costs feed, water, housing, care, and risk, and must pay that back).
