Walk into the shade behind many a natural-farming homestead and you'll find a row of blue drums, each with a different smell — one sharp with neem, one biting with chilli and garlic, one a deep herbal reek that makes your eyes water. This is the botanical spray shelf: neemastra, agniastra, brahmastra, dashparni ark. The names come from weaponry — astra, a divine missile — and that naming tells you both the promise and the trap. They are useful. They are not divine missiles. This article gives you the recipes, the timing, and the honesty in equal measure.

First, the honest frame

Botanical sprays are tools, not miracles. They sit on the soft end of the pest-management shelf — gentler on your predators, pollinators, soil, and lungs than a broad-spectrum chemical, and nearly free if your farm grows the ingredients. But "gentler and cheaper" is not the same as "stronger." Their effects are usually repellent, feeding-deterrent, and growth-disrupting more than instantly lethal; they are less persistent (they break down in sun and rain, which is good for beneficials and bad for your reapplication schedule); and the field evidence is uneven — neem's active chemistry is genuinely well-studied, while the multi-herb ferments rest more on tradition and farmer experience than on controlled trials .

The recipes — with quantities flagged for verification

I give working quantities below because vague "some neem, some cow urine" advice helps no one. But treat every number as : Palekar's own figures shift across editions, and district KVKs and agriculture universities publish variants. Confirm against a state extension sheet before you scale up.

Neemastra — the everyday, mild one

For sucking pests (aphids, jassids, mealybugs) and as a general mild deterrent. The lightest brew, short ferment.

These are a commonly-cited proportion; confirm against your local KVK before you scale up.

Agniastra — the "fire" one for borers and caterpillars

Sharper, with pungent botanicals; used against leaf-eating and boring caterpillars and larger sucking pests.

Boil or steep, then ferment briefly (a day or two), filter, dilute (commonly a few litres per 100 L water — ) and spray. Unlike neemastra, brahmastra and dashparni above — whose quantities I was able to confirm against TNAU's published sheets — I could not confirm agniastra's quantities against an authoritative extension source. The figures above are a commonly-cited proportion only; verify them against your local KVK before you mix anything.

Brahmastra — the stronger multi-leaf decoction

The "ultimate weapon" name; a stronger decoction of several pest-repellent tree leaves (commonly neem, custard-apple/sitaphal, guava, papaya, pomegranate, and similar bitter/aromatic leaves), boiled in cow urine. Used against harder-to-shift borers and sucking pests.

  • TNAU's published recipe: ~3 kg neem leaves in ~10 litres cow urine, plus ~2 kg each of custard-apple, papaya, pomegranate and guava leaves crushed in water; boil (reduced by about half), keep ~24 h, then filter and squeeze the extract. Dilute ~2–2.5 litres of extract per 100 L water for one acre (TNAU, Organic Farming portal). The leaf list and amounts still vary by source, so confirm your version against your local KVK before you scale up.

Dashparni ark — the ten-leaf broad-spectrum ferment

Dash = ten; parni = leaves. The broadest and longest-brewed: about ten kinds of pest-repellent leaves fermented for a longer period (often two to three weeks or more) with cow dung, urine, and pungent additions (neem, chilli, garlic, ginger, tobacco, etc.). A general-purpose deterrent kept as a standing store.

Timing — the part most guides skip

  • Spray early, at first sighting, on a low pest load. These are managers, not rescuers. Their whole advantage — mildness — is also why they can't turn back a swarm.
  • Spray in the cool of the day — early morning or late evening. Midday sun degrades the active compounds fast — azadirachtin, neem's key active, undergoes rapid photodegradation by sunlight (Kilani-Morakchi et al., 2021, Frontiers in Agronomy) — and cool-hour spraying keeps you off foraging bees.
  • Avoid open flowers, or spray them when pollinators aren't active, to protect bees and beneficials.
  • Expect to reapply. Because they break down quickly, one spray is rarely enough — plan a repeat after 7–10 days or after rain . Their short persistence is a feature (kind to predators) and a chore (more passes).
  • Rotate and combine, don't monotonise. Lean on habitat and predators as the base layer; use these sprays as one tool among traps, hand-picking, and design — not the whole strategy.

A botanical spray is a good soldier in a well-run army. It is a hopeless general. Build the predator population and the companion design first; let the shelf handle the skirmishes.

The honest verdict

Neem is the strongest card on this shelf: its principal active compound, azadirachtin A, is "the major active component and is responsible for 72 to 90% of the biological activity," working as an antifeedant, an insect growth disruptor that antagonises the ecdysteroid and juvenile-hormone systems, and a sterilant — which is why neem-based products exist commercially (Kilani-Morakchi, Morakchi-Goudjil & Sifi, 2021, "Azadirachtin-Based Insecticide: Overview, Risk Assessments, and Future Directions," Frontiers in Agronomy 3). The multi-herb ferments — agniastra, brahmastra, dashparni — are plausible, cheap, low-harm, and backed by wide farmer use, but thin on controlled, single-variable field trials; their whole-recipe efficacy is more traditional knowledge than settled science . That is not a dismissal. It's the reason to make them, use them early and correctly, and keep an honest control strip — while never betting a whole crop on the shelf alone.

Confident, non-empirical claims (no citation needed): that these sprays are farm-made and low-cost; that light and rain degrade them so they need reapplying; that low persistence is gentler on beneficials; that "natural" does not mean harmless to all insects; that they manage low loads better than they rescue outbreaks (follows from mildness + non-persistence).

Claims still to confirm — treat these items as unverified until checked against your local extension source: - Agniastra quantities (urine, neem, chilli, garlic, tobacco), method, dilution. Not found on the TNAU Organic Farming portal; the recipes that circulate for it come from non-authoritative sites and disagree on quantities (e.g. tobacco 500 g vs 1 kg), so this recipe remains unconfirmed against an authoritative extension source. The tobacco/nicotine toxicity warning is now in the body as a callout. - Cow urine/dung contribution beyond the botanicals, and the desi-cow point. - Efficacy evidence — that neem is comparatively well-studied while multi-herb ferments rest mostly on tradition/farmer experience with few controlled trials.
