There is a stretch between crops — after harvest, before the next sowing, or that awkward gap while you wait for the rains — when most fields sit bare. Bare, baking, and quietly losing soil to wind and the first hard rain. That empty window is one of the biggest missed opportunities on a dry-country farm, because the single cheapest thing you can put on your soil isn't in a bag at all.

It's a plant.

The cheapest fertiliser is a plant — grown not to sell, but to be given back to the ground. That's the whole idea behind cover crops and green manure. You sow something into the gap, let it grow, and either cut-and-mulch it or turn it into the soil while it's still green and lush. It costs a handful of seed and some rain. In return you get nitrogen, organic matter, protection, and a fed soil workforce. Once you've seen it work, buying all your fertility in sacks starts to feel odd.

Why a plant beats a bag

Four things a living cover does that a sack of fertiliser can't:

  1. It fixes nitrogen from the air — for free. Legumes (pulses and their relatives) partner with Rhizobium bacteria in root nodules that pull nitrogen straight out of the air and fix it into the soil. Sunn hemp and dhaincha — the dry-country workhorses

On dry, semi-arid land, the two names you'll hear most for green manure are sunn hemp and dhaincha, because they're tough, fast, and fix nitrogen well in the pre-monsoon or early-monsoon window. The pattern:

  1. Sow with the first reliable moisture, fairly dense.
  2. Let it grow ~6–8 weeks, to around flowering — that's typically when biomass and nitrogen are near their best balance and the stems are still soft enough to rot fast. The bag of fertiliser feels like progress because you can hold it and it acts fast. But it's a purchase you repeat forever, and it does nothing for the soil's structure, cover, or biology. A cover crop feels like doing less — you're "just" growing something you won't sell — but it's the soil quietly building its own fertility, on air and sunlight and a little seed.

You don't have to convert the whole farm. Take one field's fallow window this season, sow a legume-grass mix into the first good moisture, and turn it in at flowering.
